aloe-vera-flowersI found this in a really inspiring book about Aloe Vera:

The day that really launched Aloe Vera in the UK
- 14th February 1995

On 14th February 1995, the feature article, ‘The cactus drink that may help cure millions‘ by Hazel Courtney, appeared in the ‘Good Health’ section of the Daily Mail. The article focused on the benefits of taking Aloe Vera juice for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and led to a massive increase in both awareness and demand for Aloe Vera products in the UK.

That article really did more than anything else before had ever done to put Aloe Vera juice and its benefits on the map in the UK. It also helped create what has now become a multi-million pound industry, with tens of thousands of people deriving benefits, on a daily basis, from drinking Aloe Vera juice and using topical Aloe Vera products. People are now beginning to realise that Aloe Vera really can make a positive impact to their overall health and wellbeing.

It is hard to believe that it is now over twenty years since I first witnessed the incredible healing properties of Aloe Vera, when, like Hazel Courtney, my younger sister was badly burnt while sunbathing on holiday in the Caribbean.

My elder brother and a friend of his immediately treated her with the raw gel from a fresh Aloe Vera plant when they saw what had happened. My sister, who had been in considerable pain, said that the relief was almost instantaneous when the Aloe Vera gel was rubbed on. She felt that the healing properties were ‘miraculous’ because there was little blistering, the pain subsided and the redness disappeared.

Within only a few days she had totally recovered. This was one of those many lifetime incidents one simply files away in the memory and doesn’t think much of, though, as a family we had travelled extensively and lived in the Far East and Africa for many years and had been regular users of products containing Aloe Vera.

I am continually amazed at the impact that this plant has had and continues to have on so many people’s (and indeed animals‘) daily lives and how their overall health, general wellbeing and quality of life has improved as a direct result of taking Aloe Vera, whether internally, topically or both.

The medical fraternity is still sceptical – but changing!

Although many doctors (including the ones referred to and featured in this book) are themselves now witnessing the benefits of herbal plants like Aloe Vera, I also know how sceptical many of the so-called conventional medical fraternity have been and indeed still are whenever they have heard of or been exposed to anything like Aloe Vera.

I have had doctors – people I know personally – laugh when I tell them about Aloe Vera and what it has done for people. Reactions such as these are, I believe, either due to ignorance or fear or a combination of the two!

However, it’s a fact that you and I will use Complementary Therapies and natural remedies. Not least because we have become more aware that conventional medicine (which includes the use of pharmaceutical drugs) does not and will never hold all the answers to ill health and doctors like anyone else can also be fallible. Very often such natural healing remedies, which sometimes have thousands of years of healing history behind them, may not have gone through ‘official’ clinical trials, but that does not mean to say they do not have a part to play in maintaining good health and improving overall wellbeing.

Many drugs that have gone through their ‘official’ trials have had to be withdrawn at a later date because of the damaging side effects they have had. It’s important to note that the vast majority of the world’s population still, to this day, relies on natural remedies and herbal medicines for the treatment of illnesses and diseases. To my knowledge there is no documentary evidence anywhere that would suggest that taking Aloe Vera might be harmful in any way to humans or animals, provided the product is of the highest quality and is used correctly.
